Dysentery is form of severe intestinal infection, usually resulting in abdominal pain and diarrhea. Dysentery can be caused either by bacterial or by parasitic infection. It is a common problem in Third World countries, especially in areas where hygiene standards are low, and it causes many deaths amongst children and babies. Cases of dysentery do also crop up in places, in institutions, such as hospitals and children’s homes.
Forms of Dysentery
1. Bacillary Dysentery
Also known as shigellosis, bacillary dysentery is caused by infection with the shigella bacteria. This form of dysentery is passed on via human faeces, and therefore is frequently due to dirty hands infecting food.
The effects of bacillary dysentery are sudden, producing watery diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and fever. The diarrhea will become more regular and persistent after a few days, and may contain blood and pus. Bacterial toxins (poisons) may enter the bloodstream, leading to high fever and delirium.
2. Amoebic Dysentery
Amoebic dysentery is caused by an amoebic parasite, which is found in cyst form in contaminated water and food. The cyst enters the intestine where the amoeba hatches out, passing from person to person via the faeces.
Amoebic dysentery produces more gradual symptoms than the bacillary form, but can often persist for far longer. It may cause only mild symptoms in some people, while in others it produces severe symptoms of high fever and diarrhea. The diarrhea can also often contain blood and mucus. In extreme cases, amoebic dysentery may lead to the formation of liver abscesses.
